The title ‘Plant It Firmly InThe Sand’ was inspired by an interview I heard with the great bassist/composer Dave Holland. In the interview Dave spoke of his first concerts with Miles Davis. He recounts that the first gig was tough. He was understandably nervous and the other musicians in the group didn’t seem like they were listening to him, they played through him. After the initial performance he remembered a passage from a book of Sufi writings, “Plant your banner firmly in the desert sand.”.

He took this to mean that to state oneself clearly enables others to react to us more easily. This intent changed the next gigs for him. I was so inspired hearing Dave talk that I felt it was about time to take my own banner and plant it firmly in the sand.
